Flags are regularly lowered to half-staff (or half-mast, if you’re on a ship or a naval station) to commemorate important moments in American history or honor Americans who have lost their lives. The President can also issue an order to fly flags at half-staff upon the death of a notable figure or after a tragic event.
For example, Governor Tony Evers signed an order to honor a Wisconsin sailor who died in the attack on Pearl Harbor and whose remains have finally been identified. In Arizona, Katie Hobbs has ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings. This is in honor of Arizona's Peace Officers who selflessly put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe and their dedication will never be taken for granted.
