Summer Safety Tips

Summer is a great time to enjoy outdoor activities with family and friends. However, it is important to stay safe and healthy while doing so. Here are some tips to help you stay safe this summer:

1. Stay cool in the heat: Keep cool and hydrated and minimize your time in the sun between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Drink plenty of water, find shade, visit cool buildings, slow down, bathe in cool water and wear light-coloured clothing.

2. Protect yourself from the sun: Use broad-spectrum sunscreens to avoid sunburns, rashes, blisters, and redness. Wear sunglasses and a hat to protect your eyes and face from the sun's harmful rays.

3. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to avoid dehydration. Avoid alcohol and caffeine as they can dehydrate you.

4. Be mindful of food safety: Keep food safe by washing your hands before handling food, keeping hot foods hot and cold foods cold, and avoiding cross-contamination.

5. Practice water safety: Always supervise children when they are near water. Wear a life jacket when boating or participating in water sports.

6. Be aware of insect bites: Use insect repellents containing DEET (N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) when you are outdoors. Be sure to follow the instructions on the label.

7. Be cautious around fireworks: Fireworks can be dangerous if not handled properly. Always follow the instructions on the label and never allow children to play with fireworks.

8. Be prepared for emergencies: Have a first aid kit on hand and know how to use it. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
