What Is Monkeypox

Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by the monkeypox virus. It is similar to human smallpox. The virus is usually found in animals such as rodents and monkeys. The disease is most common in some African countries. It can cause a painful rash, enlarged lymph nodes and fever. The spread of transmission of the disease is mainly by direct contact with an infected animal or man.

Little person-to-person transmission has been identified. However, it can occur in people. The disease produces a vesicular rash that is indistinguishable from smallpox, but differentiated by the presence of lymphadenopathy.
